A bar or suspended anode, usually made of zinc or aluminum, serves as a sacrificial anode to protect ship hulls and other metallic structures in the water from corrosion.
It works by attracting the corrosion process to itself and gradually dissolving in the process, protecting the underlying metal. Zinc anodes are ideal for salty seawater, while aluminum anodes are used in brackish and fresh water.
In environments such as harbor basins, extraneous currents caused by electrical systems or neighboring ships can accelerate anode wear. This leads to an increased risk that important components such as propellers or rudders, which would normally be protected by the anodes, become unprotected due to premature anode loss and are therefore more susceptible to corrosion damage.
Regular use and inspection of bar or suspended anodes is therefore crucial to ensure reliable corrosion protection.
