The path to safe waters: From wooden hull to sacrificial anode

Ships used to be made of wood, which made them stable but slow. Fouling on the hull and the shipworm caused damage until copper plates with copper nails provided protection. ⚒️

The introduction of steel made larger ships possible, but rust remained a problem. Aluminum impressed with its corrosion resistance, but it was not invulnerable without a protective coating.

In the 20th century, the electrochemical causes of corrosion were recognized and sacrificial anodes became the solution. This affects not only the owners of steel or aluminum yachts, but also those of yachts made of fiberglass-reinforced plastic (GfK) or wood, as fittings, saildrives and propellers are also susceptible to corrosion.

Why zinc and aluminum?
Zinc and aluminum are the materials of choice to counteract corrosion. They offer ideal protection for steel and aluminum yachts as well as for fittings, propellers and saildrives.

The right material is selected depending on the type of water – salt or fresh water:
Zinc: Perfect for use in salt water.
Aluminum: Ideal in fresh & brackish water
