Application:
A bar or suspended anode is a sacrificial anode made of zinc or aluminum, depending on the specific application and environmental conditions. This anode is attached to ship hulls, boats or other metallic structures in the water to protect them from corrosion. It works through the process of galvanic corrosion, where the anode as the less noble metal attracts the corrosion process and gradually dissolves to protect the underlying metal.
Zinc and aluminum anodes are used in different environments, with zinc being particularly suitable for salty waters such as seawater, while aluminum is used in brackish water and fresh water.
Particular care must be taken in harbor basins or on jetties, as external currents often occur there. These currents are caused by electrical installations, neighboring ships or other metallic structures in the water and lead to increased wear of the anodes as they accelerate corrosion.
The use of bar or suspended anodes is therefore of particular importance, as increased anode wear can shorten the service life of the anode. If the anode is worn away more quickly, this can lead to the protected components, such as the propeller or rudder, remaining unprotected due to the reduced mass of the anode. In such cases, there is a risk that these important parts, which would normally be protected from corrosion by the anodes, become more susceptible to corrosion damage due to the premature loss of the anode itself.
